How it works
This keyboard uses the 2-set layout (두벌식), the standard Korean layout on every computer and phone in Korea. Consonants sit on the left side of the keyboard and vowels on the right, so typing Korean feels like a left-right rhythm: consonant, vowel, consonant.
How to type
- Click in the text box and make sure the toggle shows 한. Press the Esc key or tap the toggle to switch back to English letters.
- Type letters in reading order. For 한, press g (ㅎ), k (ㅏ), s (ㄴ). The syllable builds itself.
- For the double consonants ㄲ ㄸ ㅃ ㅆ ㅉ and the vowels ㅒ ㅖ, hold Shift.
- Compound vowels like ㅘ are typed as two vowels: ㅗ then ㅏ.
- When you're done, press Copy and paste it into a message, a search box or a document.
A final consonant automatically jumps to the next syllable if you type a vowel after it, exactly like a real Korean keyboard: typing ㄷ ㅏ ㄹ ㄱ ㅣ gives 달기, not 닭ㅣ.
Install Korean on your own device
For everyday use, add the Korean keyboard to your device once. It's free and built in everywhere:
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Korean. Switch with the 한/영 key or right Alt.
- Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → add Korean, "2-Set Korean".
- iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Korean (Standard).
- Android (Gboard): Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Korean, choose the "QWERTY" layout.
Stickers with Hangul for your keys are cheap online, but most people learn the layout in a week by practicing with a key chart like the one below.
Frequently asked questions
How do I type Korean on an English keyboard?
Use the 2-set layout: each English key stands for one Korean letter (g = ㅎ, k = ㅏ, s = ㄴ). On this page you type normally and the letters join into syllables. To type Korean everywhere, add the Korean input method in your device settings.
How do I type ㄲ, ㅆ or ㅉ?
Hold Shift and press the key of the plain letter: Shift+R gives ㄲ, Shift+T gives ㅆ, Shift+W gives ㅉ, Shift+E gives ㄸ and Shift+Q gives ㅃ.
How do I type ㅘ or ㅢ?
Type the two vowels in a row. ㅗ + ㅏ = ㅘ, ㅜ + ㅓ = ㅝ, ㅡ + ㅣ = ㅢ, ㅗ + ㅣ = ㅚ.
Why do my letters come out separate, like ㅎㅏㄴ?
A syllable must start with a consonant. If you want a syllable that starts with a vowel sound, begin with ㅇ (the D key): 아 is ㅇ + ㅏ.
